CAD Linework from Drone Data for Residential Contruction Example
Recon Aerial Calgary completed a drone mapping and surveying mission to support an architectural firm tasked with placing a home on a 10-acre waterfront lot. Over the course of three flights at 170, 220, and 250 feet, we collected nearly 800 images in just two hours at varying ground sample distances (GSDs).
Traditionally, an architect or planner would need to visit the site multiple times to assess setbacks, elevation profiles, property lines, sight lines, and access to the waterfront. In this case, our drone survey eliminated the need for repeat visits.
We delivered a full photogrammetric data package, with CAD-ready linework used to create plan views and section profiles to aid in development and planning.
The results were pivotal: the architect gained a complete understanding of the site, accurately positioned the home in relation to natural features, and aligned with client constraints and condominium covenants. The aerial survey even revealed substantial elevation changes, prompting additional road planning that would have otherwise been overlooked.

CAD Linework from Drone Data for Engineering and Civil Projects
Recon Aerial Calgary was engaged to perform a drone flight operation to produce a detailed, layered as-built drawing for an urban site.
The deliverable included a full set of standard site features—spot elevations, curbs, sidewalks, roads, paths, building footprints and heights, sewer grates, utility manholes, and more.
The mission was autonomously planned to cover 10 acres at 400 feet. In a single 30-minute flight, our team captured 155 high-resolution images. Base station data and ground control points were collected onsite to ensure precise georeferencing of the final orthomosaic. Total onsite time was just 1.5 hours.
After processing, we delivered a highly accurate layered AutoCAD .dwg file, supporting assets, and a client-ready PDF. The entire project—from initial planning to final delivery—was completed in just 7 days.

WHY USE DRONES TO CREATE FEATURE SETS
AND DRAWINGS IN AUTOCAD??
AND DRAWINGS IN AUTOCAD??
Why Use Drones for AutoCAD Feature Sets and Drawings?
Because linework from drone data is faster, more detailed, and more cost-effective than traditional surveying.
Drones capture data rapidly—even across large areas. For example, a 10-acre mapping flight takes only minutes, and with ground control and survey points included, the full operation is typically complete within 3–4 hours. That efficiency slashes field time and labour costs.
The results are detailed, feature-rich as-built CAD drawings that often outperform conventional cadastral or topographic surveys. These outputs are invaluable for planning and development. For instance, an industrial site near water can leverage drone-to-AutoCAD drawings to map drainage infrastructure and build an environmental release management plan with confidence.
Our drone data also delivers exceptional accuracy. On a recent project, the average XYZ error was just 14 mm, ensuring features like manholes, building corners, and drainage outlets are shown within millimetres of their true position.
When precision, efficiency, and smart site planning matter, linework from drone data is the clear choice.

Planimetric CAD Exports
Alongside photogrammetry outputs, we also deliver planimetric CAD drawings tailored to client needs. These are especially valuable for as-built documentation, master site planning, or base map layers used by engineers, land developers, and planners. Clients choose the exact feature set required—whether for development drawings or detailed as-builts.
Typical CAD feature sets include: roads, curbs, paint striping, building outlines and elevations, spot elevations, pathways, fences, manholes, storm drains, transformers, light standards, utility infrastructure, ponds, lagoons, hydrants, sidewalks, building labels, GCPs, trees, contour intervals, breaklines, and more.
A standard deliverable includes three AutoCAD .dwg files:
Planimetric features
Breaklines
Planimetric DTM
When needed, we can also provide section drawings to clearly highlight elevation changes across a site.
